This dish is a perfect meal to enjoy for breakfast, brunch, lunch and even as a weeknight dinner. If butter beans are not available cannelleni beans or any white beans are a wonderful substitute. They can be purchased dried or canned in any Mediterranean Grocery store. Slow simmered with fresh tomatoes, garlic and onion for a flavourful sauce! Butter beans are a large white bean that have a soft buttery flavour. In this recipe I added butter beans and dried oregano to give it a Cypriot twist. This Shakshuka features our farm meaty tomatoes with farm garlic and fresh parsley! This Cypriot Butter Bean Shakshuka was inspired by the popular Middle Eastern Dish which is made with a cumin spiced tomato sauce. They have to be the most delicious tomatoes I have ever had. I must say farmer Jesse puts so much passion and love into growing and nurturing them. Tomato season has to be one of my favourite growing seasons on the farm. One was lower quality- smaller, mushier bean.Do you know what makes the most delicious and flavourful dishes the ones that use fresh local ingredients straight from our farmers. My two cans of butter beans were different brands. Definitely use three red onions- they are a primary ingredient in the dish and really contribute to the smoky pickled appeal. I didn’t have piquillo peppers so used a jar banana peppers. COULD SOMEONE PLEASE DOUBLECHECK RECIPE AND REVISE AS APPROPRIATE?Ībsolutely fantastic and easy. THIS CAN"T POSSIBLY REQUIRE 3 RED ONIONS. You could use white beans or chickpeas even. Three large onions will shrink down to about 1 after 15-20 minutes, the longer you caramelize them the better! I have not made it yet, but I will and it looks SIMPLE and delicious. You might also consider a source of heat other than red chile flakes, but that may be just me, I find them generally to be an inferior ingredient. I would suggest using just about any sort of sweet pepper (red bells wouldn't be my first choice, but would still work well)- roasted would be better, but not crucial. Piquillo peppers are nice, but this is an awfully expensive way to go, adding $10 or so to what is basically a very humble dish. "Three onions" is awfully vague they might easily run anywhere from a couple of ounces up to a pound a piece, but if completely caramelized (which will take more like an hour) it's not all that much. Right now the leftovers are simmering with some sautéed peppers and chicken in chicken broth-and oh yeah, more tomatoes-to make a pretty tasty soup for us tonight. With some tweaking, I thought it was pretty tasty. I agree also that the red chili flakes would not ring my chimes but I love smoked paprika and keep it in both hot and sweet versions so I didn’t need the chili flakes. I thought it looked good but but looking at the recipe…no way did the beans in that picture have just one tablespoon tomato purée. I did this with leftover black-eyed peas. It was nice with cornbread & just as nice the next day served over rice. ![]() I really liked the recipe- I ended up using the whole 6 ounce can of tomato paste although it would have been okay with a smaller amount. I used dried royal corona beans from Rancho Gordo because that's the closest I had to butter beans. ![]() I used yellow onions, red bell pepper, hot smoked paprika along with aleppo flakes. I've been stuck at home by icy roads for the last 2 days so couldn't get my hands on exact ingredients. It drives me crazy when someone changes a recipe before reviewing. The recede should suggest an alternative that people can actually find. Piquillo peppers are not readily available. Be warned though - this is spicy! So cut down on the red pepper flakes if you are not a heat fan. Was a great way to add some protein to the dinner. I loved the result - a spicy side dish that paired perfectly with a mushroom pasta I was serving for dinner. And I used about 5 oz of tomato paste, and then added 1/4 c. As others have suggested, I used roasted red peppers bc I could not find piquillo peppers.
